Why is My Vape Leaking? Top Fixes
- Weak Top Seal
Condensate Accumulation: Normally, there is a piece of cotton placed between the vape cartridge and the mouthpiece to absorb the condensation generated during vaping, preventing it from flowing back into the mouth. However, if the device is placed upside down, the condensation cannot be absorbed by the cotton, causing it to accumulate at the mouthpiece and eventually flow out through the mouthpiece. This results in false leakage (what leaks out is not e-liquid, but condensation).
Fix 1: Regularly wipe the mouthpiece and airway, and keep the equipment dry.
- Poor Tank Seal
Filling Port Sealing Ring Aging or Deformation: This issue usually happens with open-system pod devices. If the filling port gasket is not tightened properly after refilling, or if it becomes deformed from over-tightening, the port cannot be fully sealed. This leaves small gaps around the filling port, which may cause leakage.
Fix 2: Check and replace the gasket regularly; press lightly when refilling to avoid excessive compression.
Base Silicone Ring Damage: Inside the vape device, there is a silicone ring at the bottom of the cartridge that seals it to prevent leakage. However, frequent disassembly, cleaning with corrosive liquids, or prolonged exposure to high heat can damage the silicone ring, resulting in poor sealing and subsequent leakage.
Fix 3: Avoid leaving the device in high temperatures (e.g. inside a car). Check the silicone rings regularly, clean them gently, and avoid disassembly with violence.
Vape Cartridge Rupture: Most vape cartridges are made of plastic and may crack if dropped or squeezed too hard, leading to leakage.
Fix 4: Avoid placing the atomizer in high positions where it may fall or subjecting it to excessive external force.
Air Pressure Change: On an airplane or inside a hot car, the cartridge may experience excessive air pressure differences, which can force the e-liquid out of the chamber and cause leakage.
Fix 5: Empty the cartridge or avoid filling it completely before boarding a plane. Also, avoid exposing the atomizer to sunlight directly during daily use.
- Coil Issue
Aging coil: When the coil has been used for a long time, the internal cotton loses its ability to retain e-liquid. E-liquid that the cotton cannot fully absorb may leak out through the central airway.
Fix 6: Replace the coil regularly.
- Other Reasons
Excessive Airflow Resistance: Frequent forceful vaping can draw too much e-liquid into the cotton, which may result in accumulation and leakage, or even cause the e-liquid to be drawn directly into the mouth.
Fix 7: Simply inhale gently.
Overfilling the Vape Cartridge: Filling e-liquid beyond the recommended level causes the coil’s cotton to absorb too much e-liquid, which cannot be vaporized in time. This results in e-liquid leaking from the cartridge or through the airflow channel.
Fix 8: Do not fill more than 80–90% of the cartridge capacity, leaving buffer space in advance.
Using Too Thin E-liquid: The viscosity of e-liquid is directly related to whether the cotton inside the coil can absorb it in time. Since the cotton requires a certain amount of time to soak the liquid, overly thin e-liquid may seep through before absorption, easily leaking out through the airflow channel.
Fix 9: Check the VG/PG ratio and choose an e-liquid with suitable viscosity. The lower the VG ratio, the thinner the e-liquid. In general, Mod systems use thicker e-liquids with higher VG, while pod systems use thinner e-liquids with lower VG.
- Long-Term Disuse or Improper Placement: If a vape device is left unused for a long time, the e-liquid remaining in the coil can gradually seep out. Similarly, if the device is stored upside down or laid on its side for too long, the e-liquid may leak out due to gravity.
Fix 10: If the device will not be used for a long time, make sure to empty any remaining e-liquid. Always keep the device upright, and avoid placing it upside down or on its side.
